so, here's the final solution for all of you who are still wondering if your answer was correct. (i assumed that our answers were incorrect, because the solution was "arbitrary" as someone on this forum stated earlier.)

As almost everyone has determined, the inside-the-box answer was:
4-3-6-1-8-2-7-5

my wife and i had solved the 13 previous puzzles separately, but we decided to work together in the final. we found the box and determined the answer above by about 2:25pm ET by my watch. i submitted the answer and thought we had done well.
jenny then found the box lid (for some reason, she decided to click around a little bit more) and we saw that there was more to the puzzle. we couldn't decide on a good solution to the box lid problem, so we resorted to just counting the distinct lines that make up the eight characters. here's what we came up with:
4-6-4-4-6-3-7-2
i told my wife this had to be incorrect, but she wanted to submit it anyway. i told her "whatever" (using my best high school girl voice), then we worked out the final solution by combining the two sets of numbers. the answer she submitted was:
4-3-6-4-2-4-7-6

she submitted her answer around 2:35pm ET. i was sure we were way too slow to win... but the puzzles were fun, so we were just happy to compete. jenny was very surprised when she received The Call.

we live in georgia... looking forward to meeting DecipherGuy from arizona who is also a finalist according to pirateblog.

I suspected their might be a hurricane
during the contest in regards to time of year and location which made me think volvo would have the cars location not in the bahamas but looks like they over looked that.

More then likely they will push the contest after hurricane chris moves on etc.
